Out past the South Shore break, where the swell rolls in long and slow, Wind and Sophie lay belly-down on their paipos, catching wave after wave.
"I can catch any wave," said Wind. "I can surf better than the demigod Māui himself."
"Bet you can't catch that one," said Sophie, nodding at a big blue shoulder of water building far outside.
Wind grinned. He paddled for it. Too far. Always a little too far — that was Wind. He stretched for the wave the way he stretched for everything.
